Dicourse Community Response
We all live in some of the four discourse communities or even all four and most are pretty similar in a broad sense but for some reason we just don’t classify them as communities. A discourse course community is defined as a social group that communicates, in part using written texts but also shares common goals, values, writing standards, specialized vocabulary, and specialized genres. Throughout my report, I will introduce you to some of my distinct discourse communities. The four discourse communities would be: academic community as in what you do as a student; professional community as in what you do at your workplace; personal community as in what you do in your personal life as a family member or friend etc.; civic community as in what you do to better society like a political activist, volunteer, etc.. Each discourse community addresses a distinct audience for a specific purpose, through writing or speaking, depending on the community. As the communities change, genres and topics change as well varying from research papers to grocery lists. The convention would all be pretty similar because in order for a convention to work everyone has to respect each other, be polite, etc. Also each community has a different specialized language as in formal English, informal English or slang. It is an honor to be a member of these specialized communities but they all have different forms of initiation. In my report I will introduce you to my academic discourse community, The University of Texas at El Paso and my professional discourse community, Buffalo Wild Wings.
